Salford City suffered a third home defeat of the season at the hands of Colchester United.

The Us struck twice from set pieces in the first half, and sealed a 3-0 win with a goal on the counter in the second half.

Chances came to new signing Matt Smith, who went straight into the starting line-up for his debut, and Conor McAleny, but both were denied by instinctive saves by Shamal George.

But ultimately The Ammies didn’t create enough as Colchester won their first in seven, and Gary Bowyer feels his side need to get used to playing with their new front man.

“It’s really disappointing, we didn’t start the game very well, the goal was coming for the first goal then obviously to concede the two goals that we did in the first half, the manner of them, both from set plays, was really disappointing because we’ve defended them really all this season.

“So from that point of view we were really disappointed but second half we went a little bit more direct and tried to get into the game. Their goalie’s made a wonderful save from Conor McAleny then he’s made another from Matt Smith.

“We needed one in the opening 20 minutes of the second half but we kept going and we got done on the counter at the end, but that was from us really going to try and get that first goal.

“I think we were getting used to Matt Smith being on the pitch playing with us, we spoke about it after Tuesday’s game; when you bring in new players they need time to get bedded in and get the relationship going. I think it was difficult for us in the first half but second half we got better at it, what we can do when he’s in the team.

“He’s going to be a massive plus for us this season, his experience and the way that he played today he won the majority of his headers, it’s about us timing our runs now and feeding off him properly.

“We’ve got to learn from that today and put that right on Tuesday, but the focus now shifts straight onto Tuesday.”

Salford head up to Barrow in a couple of days’ time, KO 19:45 at the Dunes Hotel Stadium. Click here for more information including ticket and travel details.
