Salford City’s wait for an Emirates FA Cup Third Round appearance continues after a 2-0 defeat against Chesterfield at The Peninsula Stadium.

The National League leaders went ahead through a spectacular Liam Mandeville effort from outside the box, after Scott Loach had denied Brandon Thomas-Asante on a couple of occasions and Jordan Turnbull.

A positive response saw Turnbull head over and Matthew Lund force another good save from Loach with a driven low shot, and in the second half the centre-back was denied from the edge of the box before Aramide Oteh sliced a chance wide.

That left the opportunity for Jim Kellermann to settle the tie late on with a close range finish from a tight angle, sending Chesterfield into the Third Round for the first time since 2014.

Speaking afterwards, Gary Bowyer felt the pattern of the game was more akin to the start of the season as Salford’s unbeaten run also came to an end.

“Obviously [the feeling’s] one of disappointment, I think it’s a missed opportunity for us.

“On reflection it’s probably a bit like we were at the beginning of the season where we’ve created chances, we’ve had balls flashed across the box, but we’ve not been clinical enough.

“You look at their goalkeeper, their goalkeeper’s made a great save from Brandon Thomas-Asante then obviously the save that he makes from Jordan Turnbull from the corner, another save he makes from Jordan Turnbull later on.

“We’re just disappointed we’ve not seized that opportunity to progress but congratulations to them. We’ll take the analysis from this then all focus switches to Barrow.”
