Salford City is delighted to announce that Richie Towell has agreed to sign for the club following his release from Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Irish midfielder has signed a two-year deal at The Peninsula Stadium, having been on loan at Rotherham United for the last two seasons where he won promotion to The Championship via the League One play-offs in 2017-18.

His career started with Crumlin United before a move to Celtic in 2007, where he spent time on loan at Hibernian. That was followed by a move to Dundalk in the Airtricity Premier Division where he won the PFAI Young Player of the Year in 2013 and back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015,  as well as playing in the Champions League.

Brighton picked up Towell in November 2015, and he made his debut in the FA Cup in January 2016. His first goal came in January 2017 in the FA Cup, and at the end of the season The Seagulls were promoted to The Premier League although Towell would then go out on loan to Rotherham.

Internationally Towell has represented the Republic of Ireland from Under-17 to Under-21 level, and now the Dublin-born midfielder is aiming high with The Ammies.

“I’m really excited to join Salford City, I know it’s a club with a lot of ambition,” he said.

“Ever since I first watched the documentary last year, you can see that the club is going in the right direction, it has the right people on board and I’m really excited to be a part of something special.

“I want to add to what the team has already been doing, they have been doing really well over the last few seasons so hopefully I can just add to that.

“Being a central midfielder it would be nice to get some goals and assists and to excite the fans as well!

“I think with the ambitions that the club has, to get promoted is definitely one of them. Obviously we’ve just been promoted last year so it’s a big task, but I’m sure with the people involved with the club it’s something that we’re well capable of and that we’re all really excited for as well!”

Manager Graham Alexander added: “We’re delighted to get Richie on board, I think he’s a great addition to our club!

“He’s got lots of experience at Championship level, he’s still a young player with good ambitions, he plays with loads of energy, good aggression, and we can’t wait to work with him.”

We would like to welcome Richie and his family to The Peninsula Stadium, and we wish you a successful stay with us!
