SALFORD CITY will be out to extend their lead at the top of the Vanarama National League North when Alfreton Town visit The Peninsula Stadium on Saturday (KO 15:00).

A 1-0 victory at Boston United on Tuesday night saw The Ammies take a one point lead over Harrogate Town at the top.

With Harrogate not playing on Saturday either, Salford have the opportunity to extend that lead to four points if they can beat Alfreton Town.

The Reds went through a dynasty change last season with Nicky Law leaving the club part way through the season to take a role with Burnley, and John McDermott taking up the role this summer.

The Derbyshire outfit have struggled for some consistent form, and following a five match unbeaten league run, Alfreton have won one and lost three of their last four in the league.

However that win came at Tamworth, and although they followed that up with a loss at home to Harrogate last weekend they were unlucky to get nothing out of the game.

Midfielder Mark Shelton moved to The Peninsula Stadium in the summer from Alfreton Town, and says it’ll be good to see some of his former team-mates:

“There are some good people at the club, it’ll be good to see a few old faces.

“I enjoyed my time there; we did well to stay up last season and they’re not doing too badly this season.

“It was good to be playing football and getting to know the level I was playing at, which has helped for this year as well.”

Now Salford are at the top of the league, the 21-year-old says that he hopes his new side can maintain that position:

“It’s a great position to be in and you can’t ask for any better than that from the boys.

“Boston’s a difficult place to go on a Tuesday night, but we did well and got the result that we wanted.

“Since the start of the season the boys have been upbeat, and hopefully we’ll still be top come May.”
