The midfielder's career started at Stoke City after coming through the academy at Crewe Alexandra, although he had a number of loan moves before leaving for his first spell at Rochdale in 2013. Eight goals in 40 league appearances helped Dale to promotion to League One in his first season before establishing in the third tier.
