Central midfielder Danny Whitehead joined the club from Macclesfield Town having just won the National League in 2017-18.

Danny started his career at Stockport County and after becoming a first team regular in The Conference, West Ham United paid an undisclosed fee for him in June 2013. That season he made his only Hammers appearance in an FA Cup defeat at Nottingham Forest in January, and the following January he had his contract terminated. Whitehead signed at Accrington Stanley for the rest of the season before a first spell at Macclesfield Town.

A successful first half to the season saw Wigan Athletic offer him a two-and-a-half year deal, with Whitehead staying at Macclesfield for the rest of the season, then in 2016-17 he was loaned out to Cheltenham Town. Lack of minutes saw him return and go on loan again to The Silkmen, and in the summer he signed a one-year deal at Moss Rose in which he scored five goals in 35 appearances as Macclesfield returned to the Football League.

He made it back-to-back promotions from the National League after playing a prominent part in 2018-19.
