Salford City Lionesses will compete in the North West Women’s Regional Football League Premier Division next season after an application for promotion was accepted!

The latest achievement in the Lionesses’ history will see them compete at the highest level they have played at, against teams such as Tranmere Rovers, Crewe Alexandra, Morecambe, Wigan Athletic and West Didsbury & Chorlton.

After forming in 2018 the Lionesses enjoyed immediate success in the seventh tier, going the whole league season unbeaten on their way to winning the Greater Manchester Women’s Football League title, along with the League Cup and Shield. They also reached the Manchester FA County Cup Final, losing to the higher division FC United of Manchester.

The 2019-20 season in the sixth tier started off well, and the Lionesses took to the league with relative ease as well as making strides in the NWWRFL’s Argyle Cup. Unfortunately the season was null and voided due to the Coronavirus outbreak with the Lionesses in a strong position at the top of the table, and promotion wasn’t available.

Salford City LionessesLast season the Lionesses successfully entered the Women’s FA Cup for the first time, facing Morecambe in the Preliminary Round. Despite defeat, the Lionesses quickly found their feet in the league and heading into Christmas were top, but Coronavirus again halted the season and it was also null and voided.

However in April 2021 the FA opened up applications to be considered for promotion, and having been successful we are excited to be taking this next step in the Lionesses’ chapter!

Lionesses secretary Zarah Connolly commented:

“We’re delighted with the news that Salford City Lionesses have gained promotion into the Premier Division!

“The past two seasons have been the hardest yet, but they couldn’t have happened without the hard work from all of our players and staff across that time.

“Thank you to the FA, North West Women’s Regional committee and everyone at the Club that has helped us gain Upward Club Movement, and a huge congratulations to all the girls and staff from our previous two campaigns for their dedication and hard work on and off the pitch, without which this wouldn’t have been possible.

“We can’t wait to get underway with pre-season now and kick start our 2021-22 season!”

Players’ player of the season 2020-21

The Players’ Player of the Season was won by all-action midfielder Abby Bennett who was a key player in the vast majority of the 21 goals scored in six matches; well done Abby!

Staff Player of the Season 2020-21

Congratulations to Grace Pomfret who has been awarded the Staff Player of the Season after an impressive debut season between the sticks!

Manager’s player of the season 2020-21

Feiruz Abdullahi celebrates with Abby Bennett after Salford City Lionesses take the lead away at Liverpool Feds Reserves in a friendlyFormer Manager Dean Sibson has awarded the final Player of the Season award to captain Feiruz Abdullahi, who scored 13 goals and finished as top scorer for the third year out of three. Having left for a full time opportunity in Europe, Dean wanted to add that Feiruz’s attitude on and off the pitch, her work rate and leadership were all significant in his choice, and not just the goals scored; well done Feiruz!

More details about the forthcoming season will be announced as they come into line, but we are excited for the campaign ahead and look forward to seeing how we go!
