Salford City Lionesses Manager Nathan Soulby says his side rose to the occasion perfectly as the Lionesses booked their place in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup Second Round for the first time ever.

Two goals in each half secured a 4-0 win against Alnwick Town Ladies from the level above, and it was a dominant performance by the ladies playing at the Peninsula Stadium for the first time.

The opening goals came in a three-minute spell as Safron Newhouse fired in the first from the left of the area, and Ellen Thornton headed in a second shortly after from a corner.

In the second Feiruz Abdullahi finished across goal to put her side three goals to the good, and Laura Tobin added a fourth after some very neat footwork inside the box allowed her to squeeze a shot past Ella Metcalfe.

It hasn’t been a straightforward passage to the First Round, coming from behind against Curzon Ashton and Chester, before losing at Barnsley and being reinstated after they fielded an ineligible player. But today there was no mercy shown and Soulby agreed it was a deserved win for his side.

“It’s incredible considering where we were a few weeks ago, how we felt at that point, but we took our second chance today and really made the most of it, put a decent side to bed. They’re obviously light on numbers but we’ve won every battle on the pitch and were collectively the better team so it’s fully deserved!

“I’ve not got one word, it was superb from start to finish in front of a decent crowd of people who want to see this team playing here. We feel we deserved to be showcased as well, the Lionesses have done some incredible stuff in the three and a bit years of their existence, we’ve added to that today, smashed another record, into the second round.

“The team talk today to be fair was to play the occasion really and not the game, it’s a one-off currently, the hype about it has been amazing over the last week since we’ve known and we needed them to rise to that. If you’re feeling good, you’re playing good and I think we saw that.

“The goals, we’ve seen some incredible football, well worked individual goals, one from a corner, one of the best goals you’ll see for the fourth one and I really can’t ask much more.”

The Second Round is due to take place on Sunday 28th November, we’ll update with details of the draw once it has been made.
